Quality Hotel 11 is located in the old Eriksberg shipyard area in two former machine halls; Blå Hallen ( The Blue Hall ) and Eriksbergshallen ( Eriksberg´s Hall ). Towards the end of the 60's and the beginning of the 70's, the activity in the Eriksberg area was at its peak. Here, they made and testoperated the diesel engines that were to be installed in the ships built at this shipyard.
Since the Middle Ages, Göta Älv ( The Göta River ) has been of great importance with respect to Swedish trade.
The origin of the Eriksberg Shipyard was a small mechanical workshop established in 1853. The workshop started as a blacksmith´s galvanic and ship workshop. Here, they made pumps, winches, capstens, bolts, but also stoves, ornaments, grave fences and eventually also bridges and castings for buildings.
The first ship was delivered in 1873. Eriksberg Shipyard was expanded in several stages from the first installation at the Eriksberget ( The Erik Mountain ). The most expansive era was from 1940 well into the 70's.
In 1959, the dry dock with the big gantry crane was added. In 1975, the Eriksberg Shipyard delivered eleven ships with a total of 965.000 dwt. The number of employees was 5.100. The activity was discontinued in 1979 during the worldwide shipyard crisis.
